Darrell Garton saw the light drain from his business when COVID-19 reared its ugly head in early 2020.
The EK Productions owner witnessed the spotlight dimming on his professional lighting business with the cancelling of concerts, weddings and other events.
“The pandemic has brought us nothing for the last year. I’m going be honest it just sucks that there’s no revenue and nothing coming in,” says Garton, who’s been in business for four years. “We’re just going with the flow.”
With complete systems for corporate and social events, concerts, awards banquets, weddings and other functions, EK Productions focuses on unique moving lights and special effects for any venue.
The largest part of Garton’s business is with lighting and staging, including illuminating the Calgary Stampede and Telus Convention Centre in Calgary.
Through the uncertainty, he has chosen to focus on the positives including an ongoing contribution to our community.
“We are the company that lit up the outside of Genesis Place in colors for the Alberta Winter Games. That was all donated,” says Garton who also helped brighten the Airdrie water tower for the Light Up Live recognition for out-of-work event staff.
The lighting expert is taking it month-to-month with pandemic restrictions slowly being lifted.
“It would be good to get back out there.”
